Due to inclement weather on May 3, 2026, power supply was disrupted in many parts of Punjab. Heavy rain accompanied by high-velocity winds led to uprooted trees, fallen electricity poles, and snapped wires, leaving several areas without electricity for many hours.
Strong winds followed by rain caused supply lines to trip, resulting in further disruptions. As a result, Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) incurred significant losses, with around 1,200 poles and nearly 100 transformers damaged, halting power supply across the region.
Both PSPCL field staff and power consumers faced hardships on May 3, 2026, as approximately 1.20 lakh complaints regarding power disruptions were lodged with PSPCL in a single day. On May 2 around 28000, on May 1 around 37000 complaints were lodged with the powercom for no electricity
Although PSPCL acknowledged the complaints, many residents reported that power cuts in their areas had not yet been resolved. In Mohali, residents faced power outages lasting up to 23 hours.

Gurpreet Singh, a resident of Mohali, said, “There is now an urgent need to strengthen and modernize the power infrastructure in the city. Yesterday’s rain and hailstorm caused large-scale destruction in Mohali, with several trees uprooted, electricity cables snapped, and roads blocked at many places. Immediate removal of fallen trees and restoration of power is the need of the hour in this important city of the state.”
Officials stated that overhead wiring systems are especially vulnerable during such weather conditions. Falling tree branches, tilting or collapsing electric poles etc were reported as common issues.
