Today, the power demand has crossed the alarming figure of 16000 MW at around 1 PM.

Today, the power demand in Punjab crosses all time high figure when it touches 16025 MW at around 1:10 pm

A senior PSPCL engineer on the condition of anonymity said “the powercom is managing the situation after it touches 16078 MW figure.

On the other hand in the prevailing heat wave when the power demand is surging and breaking all previous records, once again one unit of 660 MW of Talwandi Sabo Power Limited (TSPL) Thermal plant shuts down.

The situation has turned ugly as it has forced the Punjab state power corporation limited (PSPCL) to manage the high demand as it has touched 16025, the highest ever demand.

“The powercom is forced to shell out extra money to purchase power through exchange route. On June 18 2024 the powercom had purchased 588 lac units and 622 lac units on June 17,2024 through exchange as PSPCL reports” said an officer on the condition of anonymity.

On June 17,2024 , Shailendra Dubey, Chairman All India Power Engineers Federation (AIPEF) had written a letter to the chief minister of Punjab, Bhagwant Mann to take immediate measures to avoid power crisis situation in Punjab.

Dubey had said that “If the situation continues alike, there are fair chances of grid disturbance. In the state of Punjab, the power consumption has gone up by 43% between June 1 to 15, 2024, when compared to the same period during 2023 while the Maximum Demand has gone up from 11309MW in June 2023 to 15775MW in June 2024 With additional agricultural load expected to rise by the end of June due to paddy cultivation in whole the state of Punjab, may lead to an unmanageable power situation.”
