108-kg female operated successfully for knee replacement at Ojas

An overweight woman of 60-yr of age has successfully operated for bilateral total knee replacement surgery at Ojas Super Specialty Hospital, Panchkula , in Haryana, recently.
Sunita. an over weight patient (patient name changed) having 108-kg in weight, was suffering with osteoarthritis in both knees.
Dr Gagan deep Gupta, consultant- orthopaedics and joint replacement surgery who performed surgery said that overweight or obesity is not a contraindication for knee replacement surgery.
He said, patients with overweight are generally advised to reduce weight and then come for surgery. However, weight cannot be reduced when a patient who is hardly able to walk due to severe knee pain.
But after knee replacement surgery, it can definitely be reduced as patient starts walking and jogging. So weight can be reduced only when patient burns calories, pointed out Dr Suresh Singla , director of orthopaedics at Ojas .
