2,21,480 licensed weapons surrendered, liquor worth 96 lacs recovered in Pb

After Model Code of Conduct come into force in the state in view of Lok Sabha polls, 2,21,480 licensed weapons have been surrendered till March 17, 2019.

Giving details in this regard , the Chief Electoral Officer Dr. S Karuna Raju said that the surveillance teams had seized 49574 litres of liquor worth Rs 96 lakh. Similarly, the enforcement wings have also recovered large quantity of psychotropic substances amounting to Rs 57.45 crore, till Friday.

The Election Commission has directed the district and the police administration to ask the arms and ammunition holders of their areas to deposit their arms and ammunition in a police station or at with the authorize person/dealers keeping in view the Lok sabha elections. The Lok Sabha elections are slated for May 19.

When contacted a SSP in Punjab, he said “SHOs have been asked to get the weapons of remaining licence holders deposited early” However, security guards at banks, government offices and some other categories, can retain their arms on obtaining a relaxation from depositing the arms, by submitting relevant reasons to the police.
