Punjab government is planning to accord district status to historic town of Anandpur Sahib of Rupnagar district.
The fact came to light in the correspondence by the SDM Anandpur Sahib with Tehsildar, BDPO and post Master of Anantapur, Sahib seeking information regarding the villages and resolutions of the concerned gram Panchayat in this regard.
It is learnt that Anandpur Sahib, which is birthplace of Khalsa, is being accorded district status as per the report of the reorganisation committee set up by the government.
It may mention that it was a long pending demand of the residents of Anandpur Sahib to accord district status to the historic town.
It is learnt that entire Anandpur Sahib Sub division, Nangal sub division and Nurpur Bedi sub tehsil off Rupnagar district would be made part of the new Anandpur Sahib district. Balachaur sub division of Nawanshahr district and Garhshanker sub division of Hoshiarpur district may also be made part of new Anandpur Sahib district.
If the new Anandpur district is carved out, the area of Rupnagar district would be further reduced. It may be mentioned that in 2006 then Captain Amarinder Singh government had carved out Mohali district out of Rupnagar district.
