Power employees and engineers observed black day on Saturday against privatization of the profit making Chandigarh electricity department and held protest demonstrations in Uttar Pradesh, said Shailendra Dubey convener Vidyut Karmchari Sanyukt Sangharsh Samiti.
A consistently profitable Chandigarh electricity department has been handed over to private corporate interests. This reckless decision prioritizes corporate profits over public welfare and exposes the flawed policies driving privatization. He said that privatization of the power sector is not acceptable in the name of reform.
All India Power Engineers Federation (AIPEF) Chairman Shailendra Dubey said that the privatization in the power sector has consistently resulted in higher electricity tariff, job insecurity, loss of public accountability and profit drift operations. AIPEF strongly condemns this anti-people decision.
Dubey said that the group of ministers formed under the leadership of the Union Minister of State for Energy has to give suggestions to improve the condition of power companies. The Union Finance Minister has also asked to encourage power distribution reforms in her budget speech. It appears from this that through the group of ministers, the central government wants to accelerate the privatization of the state’s power distribution corporations in the name of encouraging reforms. The policy of privatization is not acceptable and 27 lakh electricity employees and engineers across the country are ready to fight against these policies.
