As expected, President’s Rule has been imposed in Manipur after the ruling BJP leaders failed to elect CM since February 9,2025.
The President’s Rule was imposed after President Droupadi Murmu received a report from the state Governor.
Earlier Chief Minister N Biren Singh had resigned on February 9, leaving the state without an elected leadership. The decision comes as the deadline to convene the state assembly expired on February 12, further deepening the political uncertainty. CM N Biren Singh quit his post after nearly 21 months after ethnic violence in Manipur
This is an expected step of the union government in the trouble-torn state. Few months ago, the President of India has appointed Ajay Bhalla, a retired home secretary as the Governor of Manipur on the recommendation of the union government.
On December 25,2025 the President of India had appointed former home secretary and close confident of PM Modi and home minister Amit Shah, Ajay Kumar Bhalla as Governor of Manipur of the violence-hit state where periodic clashes between the Meitei community and the Kuki tribes have going on for more than a year. Bhalla replaced Anusuiya Uikey.

On President Rule imposed in Manipur, BJP MP Sambit Patra says, “It is a suspended animation…”
Article 356 of the Constitution
The imposition of President’s Rule under Article 356 effectively transfers all the functions of the state government to the Centre and the function of the state legislature to Parliament during the period when it is in force. The only exception to this is the functioning of High Courts, which remains unchanged.
