MP Manish Tewari and HS Lucky hold public outreach programme at Ram Darbar, Chandigarh

Bahadurjeet Singh/Chandigarh, March 2,2025

Manish Tewari MP Chandigarh and former Union Minister information and broadcasting and Harmohinder Singh Lucky, President of the Chandigarh Territorial Congress Committee addressed a public meeting in Ram Darbar today.

It was organised by Gurcharan Singh and Sonia Gurcharan Singh and other colleagues of the INC Ram Darbar.

Addressing the gathering  Tewari pointed out that it was the UPA government which from 2004 to 2014 had built the social security architecture for the poor and the marginalised in the country.

He pointed out that the salient initiatives of those times including the Right to Information, the Mahatma Gandhi National Employment guarantee program, the right to free and compulsory education, the national food security act among dozens of other such initiatives which were aimed at making the life of the poor people and the aam aadmi better.

In contrast, during the past 10 years, he pointed out that the NDA BJP government, except for promoting crony capitalism and helping oligarchs to increase their wealth, has done nothing for the benefit of the common people.

All that they are interested in is the politics of polarization by the rampant  use of communalism and majoritism.

Harmohinder Singh Lucky, President of the Chandigarh Congress, emphasized that Chandigarh has become a notice city whereby Chandigarh housing board, the Chandigarh Administration , municipal corporation Chandigarh keep serving notices to harass the ordinary residents of Chandigarh.

He pointed out that Tewari had raised the issue need based changes in the Chandigarh housing board allotted houses in an aggressive manner in Parliament.

Tiwari and Lucky lamented the fact that the Chandigarh administration and the union government in an insensitive response said that the need based changes cannot be allowed in the Chandigarh housing board allotted houses, because Chandigarh falls in seismic  zone four making it earthquake prone .

Tewari pointed that Delhi also falls in the same seismic  zone and in Delhi way back in 1999 a one time amnesty scheme was given to regularise the needs based changes made by the residents of Delhi all across the city and Parliament regularly passes a law every three months to protect and extend the amnesty.

Both Lucky and Tewari underscored the fact that they would keep fighting for the rights of the people of Chandigarh, by standing upto the  insensitive and callous NDA BJP government, which doesn’t have the welfare  of the people of Chandigarh at heart.

That is why the moment a BJP  mayor of Chandigarh has been elected through chicanery rather  than alleviating the grievances of the people, they are  only interested in increasing property tax, sewage cess  and other such a Municipal taxes, which would  unnecessary further burden the common man already reeling under the double whammy of very high inflation and chronic unemployment.
