Columbia Asia Hospital, Patialamark World Kidney Day’2019 by creating awareness about Kidney Disease, its causes and prevention.Our 2019 theme is “Kidney Health for everyone everywhere”, aiming to highlight the growing burden of kidney disease and kidney health disparity and inequity worldwide.

Dr. Nitin Kumar Consultant Nephrologist Columbia Asia Hospital Patiala told 850 million people worldwide are now estimated to have kidney diseases from various causes. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) causes at least 2.4 million deaths per year and is now the 6th fastest growing cause of death.

As you might know already, Chronic Kidney Disease is likely to be the 5th leading cause of Years of Life Lost by 2040. To tackle this issue, we can undertake several advocacy activities. We can either engage through communicating directly with the relevant stakeholders or indirectly through your informal and formal networks another way of marking WKD is to encourage awareness activities

Dr. Nitin Kumar also told most common causes of chronic kidney disease are diabetes mellitus, hypertension and alternative medication, heavy metals, overuse of NSAID’s.

Diabetes and chronic kidney disease are commonly associated. A few common questions about the Diabetes and kidney disease are as under:

  1. What is Diabetic Kidney disease?

Diabetic kidney disease is characterised by loss of proteins in urine along with progressive decline in kidney function over a few years. Approximately 30% of patients with diabetes mellitus develop kidney involvement out of which only < 1-2 % would progress to end stage renal disease. This is invariably associated with other complications of diabetes like eye changes and changes in blood vessels and nerves of body. Few patients need not have protein in the urine but there will be progressive kidney failure. According to Indian CKD registry, diabetes is the most common cause of kidney failure.

  1. What are the factors which increases the risk of kidney disease?

There are various factors like family history of Diabetic Kidney Disease (DKD), uncontrolled blood sugar, obesity, smoking, hypertension, high protein intake, high cholesterol which lead to increased risk of diabetic kidney disease.

  1. What are the presenting symptoms of patient with kidney disease?

Diabetes kidney disease can have variable presentations from asymptomatic rise of blood urea and creatinine to swelling of feet & face , frothing of urine , uncontrolled blood pressure, decreased appetite , repeated episodes of hypoglycaemia, to name a few.

    1. Regular screening of kidney disease
    2. Good blood sugar, and blood pressure control
    3. Dietary modifications
    4. Quit smoking and alcohol intake ,avoid pain killers tablets
    5. Exercise
    6. Reduce protein intake
  2. What are the treatment options available?

Once Renal Failure progressed to ESRD various treatment options are in the form of   Haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and renal transplant are available. Your Nephrologist will help you understand your disease process and the suitable options best for your kidney disease.
