Due to more than normal rainfall in June and July the reservoir level of Bhakra, Pong and Ranjit Sagar have changed their position from deficient at the start of the filling season to normal position today as compared to the corresponding period of last year. The water level at the end of the filling season will be at a comfortable level. With regular inflow of water in the reservoirs, the margin between the present level and maximum level is decreasing.
Now the IMD has made a forecast that the second half of the southwest monsoon season is expected to deliver above-normal rainfall exceeding 106% of the long-period average from August to September.
On June 20 this year the reservoir level at Bhakra was 1560.46 feet against last year’s level of 1585.65 feet, down by about 25 feet. Today the water level is 1622.9 feet against last year’s level of 1608.27 feet . This shows that water level during the filling season has increased by 48 feet . At Bhakra Dam the maximum storage limit followed by BBMB is 1680 feet. The inflow at Bhakra reservoir is 53668 cusecs and discharge of 23120 cusecs. There is still a margin of 57 feet for maximum permissible level and is likely to be achieved by end of August.
At Pong Dam the water level is 1357.56 feet against last year’s level of 1320 feet on the corresponding day. At the start of the filling season water level was 1288.5 feet. At Pong Dam the filling can be done up to 1400 feet. At Pong Dam the inflow is 95631 cusecs with outflow of 13205 cusecs. The margin left for top filling level is 42 feet and maximum generation keeping in view irrigation requirement is possible.

At Ranjit Sagar Dam the water level is 510.3 meters against last year’s level of 491.15 meters, above by 19 meters. The water inflow at Ranjit Sagar Dam is around 31040 cusecs against 9523 cusecs ..
Heavy inflow in rivers of Himachal Pradesh due to heavy rains has increased the water level in the Bhakra , Pong , and Ranjit Sagar dam reservoirs. . This time all the three dams have crossed last year’s water level on the corresponding day. The water level in the Bhakra, Ranjit Sagar, and Pong dams is crucial for irrigation and power generation in the region.
With the paddy plantation almost over the water and power requirement may dip in days to come leading to higher levels in reservoirs.
