Supreme Court issues stern orders on stray dogs, warns obstructers of legal action

In a much awaited development for general public, the Supreme Court on Monday (August 11,2025)  ordered that all stray dogs in National capital- Delhi NCR ( Noida, Gurugram and Ghaziabad) must be shifted away from residential localities to shelters within eight weeks.

Expressing serious concerns about the menace of dog bites and rabies, the Supreme Court passed an important direction to the authorities in the National Capital Territory of Delhi to immediately start picking up stray dogs from all localities and shift them to dog shelters.

The SC bench of Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice R Mahadevan, which took suo motu cognisance of a media report about incidents of dog bites leading to rabies, also directed that stray dogs which have been picked up and moved to shelters should not be released back into the streets.

The Court warned that if any individual or organisation obstructed the authorities from picking up stray dogs, then they would face legal consequences. The authorities can create a dedicated force to pick up the strays, the Court clarified.
