District Bar Association(DBA),Rupnagar has went on strike to protest against reported move of the Punjab government to accord district status to Sri Anandpur Sahib town of Rupnagar district and move to start Gram Nayalaya at Sri Chamkaur Sahib.

It was decided to continue the strike till October 17 and during that period the Association members would meet local MLA and other leaders and officials to present their point of view over the issue after which further course of action would be decided.

The speakers maintained that the formation of new district would put huge unnecessary financial burden on the public exchequer, which would not have any benefit,on the contrary such a big expenditure would  further burden the common man. Moreover,Rupnagar district and other adjoining districts would become smaller in size.

They said that Sri Anandpur Sahib had great importance and after according district status to it,large population of adjoining Himachal Pradesh would settle in the town, which would make it congested and harm its natural environment and outlook, which would hurt the sentiments of devotees visiting the town.

The speakers also opposed move to start Gram Nayalaya at Sri Chamkaur Sahib saying that there is no logic behind such a move as distance between Rupnagar and Sri Chamkaur Sahib is small and there was no infrastructure for judicial officers and lawyers there to start such Nayalaya.

The meeting was addressed among others by former presidents of District Bar Association advocates Amrit Lal Verma,JPS Dher,Aminderpreet Singh Bawa,Tara Singh Chahal,Sarabjit Singh Bains as well as advocates Kamal Katli,Sudesh Kaushal,Charanjit Singh Ghai,Udham Singh and Rajesh Kashyap.

Former District Bar Association president Advocate Dheeraj Kaushal, advocates Amarinder Singh Bheora,Navdeep Verma, secretary advocate Yashpal Gangar, vice president Sachin Bhanot, joint secretary Shehbaz Khan , cashier Tarun Dhiman and Davinder Gorla were also present on the occasion.
