A sudden explosion in a car near Gate No. 1 of the Red Fort Metro Station on Monday evening created panic in the area.
According to the Delhi Fire Department, blast-like sounds were reported around the time of the incident, following which emergency teams were alerted. The explosion also triggered fires in three nearby vehicles, officials said.
The department confirmed receiving a call about a car explosion, and multiple fire tenders were immediately dispatched to the spot. So far, seven fire engines have been deployed to control the situation.
Initial reports from the Delhi Police suggest that the blast occurred in a parked car. Senior police officers and teams from the Special Cell have reached the scene and cordoned off the area.
Ambulances have also been rushed to the site, as several people are reported to have been killed and some sustained injuries.

The Old Delhi neighborhood near the Red Fort is one of the most densely populated areas of the national capital, heightening concerns among residents and commuters.
While some reports and social media posts are speculating about a possible terror angle, officials have not issued any confirmation so far. Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the explosion and assess the extent of the damage.
An auto driver who sustained injuries in the blast near the Red Fort said the car which exploded was two feet away from him. “The car in front of me was about two feet away. I don’t know whether there was a bomb in it or something else, but it exploded. It was a Swift Dzire car,” he told PTI news agency.
More details awaited.
