The two-day Skill Enhancement Workshop on “Hydroponics for Sustainable Food Production: A Green Technology for the Future” concluded successfully at Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University, Fatehgarh Sahib. Organised by the Canopy Eco Club in collaboration with the Department of Botany and Environmental Science, the event was supported by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India, and the Punjab State Council for Science and Technology (PSCST).
The workshop attracted enthusiastic participation from 108 delegates, including postgraduate and undergraduate students, senior secondary (+2) students, research scholars and faculty members from institutions such as Government Mohindra College, Patiala; M.M. Modi College, Patiala; Mata Gujri College, Fatehgarh Sahib; Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Engineering College, Fatehgarh Sahib; Kanya Maha Vidyalaya, Jalandhar; Rayat Bahra University, Kharar; Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University itself; and several schools in the surrounding Fatehgarh Sahib region.
The second day featured an intensive hands-on training session led by Dr. Ashish R. Warghat, Principal Scientist at CSIR-Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology (IHBT), Palampur (Himachal Pradesh). Participants gained practical experience in installing and maintaining hydroponic units, preparing balanced nutrient solutions, and troubleshooting common cultivation challenges in real time, enabling them to develop direct working knowledge of the technology. During the valedictory function, Workshop Convener and Incharge of the Department of Botany and Environmental Science, Dr. Navdeep Kaur, presented a concise report highlighting the key outcomes and learning experiences of the participants.
In his valedictory address, Vice Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Prit Pal Singh emphasised the growing importance of hydroponics as a sustainable solution to challenges such as land scarcity, water conservation and food security in the context of climate change, and encouraged the young participants to pursue research and entrepreneurial opportunities in sustainable agriculture. Dean Academic Affairs Prof. (Dr.) Sukhwinder Singh Billing and Registrar Prof. (Dr.) Jasvir Singh also appreciated the initiative, highlighting its relevance to the university’s vision of promoting scientific innovation, practical skill development and environmental stewardship.

Certificates of participation were awarded to all registered delegates in recognition of their successful completion of the programme. Feedback from participants reflected very high levels of satisfaction, particularly appreciating the strong practical orientation and expert guidance provided throughout the workshop.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Organising Secretary Dr. Shveta, who expressed sincere gratitude to the Punjab State Council for Science and Technology for its financial support, to the university authorities for their continuous encouragement, and to the dedicated members of the organising committee — Dr. Nisha Sharma, Dr. Saroj Kumar Pradhan, Dr. Sharabjit Singh and Manpreet Kaur — for their tireless efforts. The workshop successfully achieved its objective of raising awareness and building practical skills in hydroponic technology, thereby reinforcing the Department’s strong commitment to sustainable development, environmental conservation and green innovation.
