After protests, pressure and delay, Punjab minister booked under 108 BNS

Finally, after high drama, Punjab Police on Saturday lodged an FIR against Punjab’s minister (as per FIR)  Laljit SIngh Bhullar, his father Sukhdev Singh Bhullar, and his personal assistant (PA) Dilbagh Singh in connection with the suicide of Gagandeep Singh Randhawa, district manager Punjab State Warehousing Corporation in Amritsar.

Amritsar’s Ranjit Avenue Police Station has lodged the FIR at 11;51 pm on Saturday after almost 17-18 hours after the suicide, on the complaint of deceased’s wife, Upinder Kaur, who accused the trio of sustained harassment, physical assault, mental torture and coercion that allegedly drove her husband to take his own life against transport minister Laljit Singh Bhullar, Sukhdev Singh Bhullar, Dilbagh Singh

The police has lodged FIR under section 108 (abetment of suicide, earlier section 306 of IPC), 351 (3) (aggravated criminal intimidation, punishing threats to cause death, grievous hurt- ealier Section 506(ii) of the IPC) and 3(5) (criminal liability for acts done by several persons in furtherance of a common intention- earlier section 34 of IPC) of BNS.

Inspector Robin Hans has been deputed the IO of the case.

 

Before his death, Randhawa recorded a 12-second video in which he blamed the former minister for forcing him to take the drastic step. Earlier the family of the deceased senior government official has accused an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) minister of allegedly assaulting, slapping, and even striking Gagandeep Singh Randhawa with a pistol, actions they claim humiliated him to the extent of committing suicide.

On Saturday, as police failed to register a case in connection with the shocking suicide of Punjab Warehousing Corporation (PWC) District Magistrate Gagandeep Singh Randhawa, senior leaders from different political parties gathered at Ranjit Avenue police station in protest against the inaction. They demanded immediate registration of a case against former Punjab Transport Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar.

SAD Chief Sukhbir Singh Badal, along with Leader of Opposition in Vidhan Sabha and senior Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa, went to the police station and impressed upon the police to register a case. Later, state BJP President Sunil Jakhar, senior SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia, Congress MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla, and other Congress leaders, Anil Joshi, Rakumar Verka, also arrived at the police station.
