GNDU Golden Jubilee Year Convocation-Eminent personalities will be honoured

All arrangements to conduct Golden Jubilee Year Convocation of Guru Nanak Dev University has been completed here under the stewardship of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Jaspal Singh Sandhu. He has himself minutely supervised all the arrangements. This Convocation will be held in newly renovated Dashmesh Auditorium of the University. Two eminent personalities Raja Randhir Singh, Lifetime Vice-President of Olympic Council of  Asia  and Dr. Gurtej Singh Sandhu, Senior Fellow and Vice President, Micron Technology, Inc. USA  would be honoured with Honoris Causa degrees in recognition of their contribution in their respective fields. As many as  173 Gold Medals, 15 Memorial Medals, Shri Sham Sundar Memorial trophy, 179 Ph.D, 21 M.Phil, 256 Master and 256 Bachelor’s Degrees will also be distributed to the Scholars.

Dr.Gurtej S. Sandhu

Captain Amarinder Singh, Chief Minister of Punjab will be the Chief Guest at this occasion. A large number of Ministers and other dignitaries will also be present to be part of this historic moment. Chief Minister will also perform the digital inauguration of University Institute of Technology and UGC Faculty Development Centre. The Foundation Stones of Guru Nanak Dev Golden Jubilee Convention Centre, School of Education and  Faculty of Agriculture Building will be laid by the Chief Guest.

Raja Randhir Singh, who will be honoured in this Convocation is eminent player of Shooting (trap and skeet), golf, swimming, squash, cricket. He also represented India in shooting at the Olympic Games (Tokyo 1964 (Reserve Shooter), Mexico 1968, Munich 1972, Montreal 1976, Moscow 1980 and Los Angeles 1984), at the Asian Games (Bangkok 1978, New Delhi 1982, Seoul 1986 and Hiroshima 1994) and at the Commonwealth Games (Edmonton 1978). He won Gold Medal in Shooting at Bangkok Asian Games and Bronze (individual) and Silver (team) at the Asian Games (New Delhi 1982).

He has the honour to work at various prestigious posts of Lifetime Vice- President of Olympic Council of Asia, Honorary Secretary-General of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) (1987-2014); Member of the governing body of Sports Authority of India (1987-2010); Secretary General of Olympic Council of Asia (1991-2015); Founder Secretary-General of the Afro-Asian Games Council (1998-2007); Member of the ANOC Executive Council (2002-); Member of the ANOC working group; ANOC Representative on the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Foundation Board (2003-2005); Member of the WADA’s Finance and Administration Committee (2005); Due to his achievements in the field of sports, he was awarded Arjuna Award (India’s highest Sports Award) (1979); Maharaja Ranjit Singh Award (State Sports Award) (1979); Merit Award from OCA (2005); Merit Award from ANOC (2006); Olympic Order, Silver (2014); Honorary Doctorate of literature from Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education, Government of India.

Dr. Jaspal S. Sandhu

Dr. Gurtej Singh Sandhu is an Indian inventor in the fields of thin film processes and materials, VLSI and semi conductor device fabrication. He is recognized for being the all-time seventh most profolic inventor  as measured by a number of U.S. utility patents. Gurtej has 1,315 U.S. utility patents as of February 5, 2019.  Currently, he is Senior Fellow and Director of Advanced Technology developments at Micron Technology, Inc. The publication Kiplinger reports, “Sandhu developed a method of coating microchips with titanium without exposing the metal to oxygen, which would have ruined the chips. Initially, he didn’t think his idea was a big deal, but now most memory-chip makers use the process.” Dr, Sandhu earned an electrical engineering degree at the IIT Delhi and PhD in  physics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
