Good news for taxpayers, especially those who were either preparing to file their income tax return in a hurry or were unable to do so because of some unavoidable reasons. However, such taxpayers can now heave a sigh of relief as the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has finally extended the due date for filing of ITR from July 31 to August 31, 2019.

The government on Tuesday extended the due date for filing income tax returns by individuals and certain non-corporate assesses for  the assessment year 2019-20 by one month to 31 August in view of the difficulties expressed by some people due to various reasons. The extension of due date was applicable to all taxpayers liable to file their tax returns by 31 July.

An official order issued by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) today in the evening, said that it was reported some taxpayers were facing difficulties in filing their tax returns due to various reasons, including extension of due date for issue of Form 16, the tax deducted at source certificate given by employers.

Income Tax department had last month extended the deadline for employers to issue Form 16 TDS certificate for financial year 2018-19 to its employees by 25 days till July 10. This left the salaried taxpayers with a limited time-frame of just 20 days to file their income tax returns.

The ITR-1 form has been simplified this year, making it easier for salaried employees to e-file returns. .It also brought changes to the TDS returns to be filed by employers with the tax department..
