Power corporation gave power shock to jail department; snaps central jail Patiala supply

Cash strapped Punjab State Power Corporation Limited start giving electric shock to government departments for not paying electricity bill. In a latest, PSPCL disconnected power supply to the Patiala Central Jail for not paying electricity bill to the tune of Rs. 1.60 crore along with two police stations in Patiala— one at Civil Lines and other at Model Town owing Rs 5 lakh and Rs1.30 lakh respectively, to the corporation.

A team of power officials disconnected power to the jail for few hours following which, the jail functioning was affected. Several hardcore gangsters are lodged in the prison and the Jail Department immediately urged the PSPCL to give them some time to pay the pending amount. PSPCL takes no time in restoring the power connections in the evening after authorities concerned of all three institutions submitted written undertaking that they will clear the dues at the earliest.

PSPCL officals said that they had issued multiple notices to the Patiala central jail and the two police stations to clear the pending dues. “But they failed to pay heed to the warnings. Following this, their power connections were snapped,” he said.

An official on the condition of anonymity said “Power corporation gave power shock to jail department; snaps central jail Patiala supply is a step to recover the pending dues. With this action other departments will take a lesson and the clear the pending dues before the corporation take any action”

He further said “ taking note of the security issues, to avoid any law and order issues in the jail premises, as the jail houses dreaded gangsters and terrorists of the region in the central jail, we restored the power supply immediately after they gave an undertaking to clear the power bills in a stipulated time period.
