Adding another feather to its cap, Maharaja Ranjit Singh Punjab Technical University (MRSPTU), Bathinda’s Department of Physics got a prestigious project worth Rs. 41 Lakhs from Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences (BRNS). The title of the project is “Methodology to estimate aerosol density of atmospheric particulates via simultaneous measurement of number and mass concentration”.
The Head of the Department and Dean Research and Development, MRSPTU, Prof. (Dr.) Jasbir Singh Hundal said that the Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences (BRNS) has sanctioned a grant of Rs. 41 lakh for this purpose.
The Principal Investigator of the project is Dr. Veena Sharma, Assistant Professor, Deptt. of Physics, MRSPTU, Bathinda. While there are two Co- Principal Investigators’ Dr. Sandeep Kansal and Dr. Gaggan Gupta from the same department.
Particulate Matter (PM) is the suspended solid or liquid matter. These are of different types like PM10, PM 2.5, PM1 based on their diameter. These PM particles have adverse effects on human health and determine the AIR QUALITY INDEX.
Till now the instruments used to measure these PMs depend on factory calibrations which are not appropriate. This project will fill the gap between measurements using factory calibration of the instruments and actual values of number and mass concentration of particulate matter.
Further the impact of meteorological parameters on PM concentration and proportion of toxic metallic pollutants and their source will also be studied.
The University Vice Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Mohan Paul Singh Ishar and Prof. Jasbir Singh Hundal congratulated MRSPTU Physics Research team comprising Dr. Veena Sharma, Dr. Sandeep Kansal and Dr. Gaggan Gupta and gave them wishes for its successful completion. They hoped that the discovery will be path-breaking because it will answer a lot of questions in the subject matter.
