PPCB introduces eco friendly compostable carry bags
Patiala- Due to ban on manufacturing, sale and use of Plastic bags by Punjab government in the state, an immediate replacement is required so that consumer can’t face hardship. Keeping this is mind Punjab Pollution Control Board has embarked upon a task to introduce and popularize the eco friendly carry bags as replacement to polythene bags as these were not eco friendly and are major environmental hazard in Punjab. These polythene bags not only clog drains but also create health problems for human beings as well as for animals too.
Keeping this in mind Punjab Pollution Control Board introduced environment friendly compostable carry bags in Patiala. Former Union Minister Preneet Kaur while launching the eco friendly bags sail all plastic carry bags in Patiala city should be replaced with compostable carry bags in near future.
On this occasion PPCB Chairman KS Pannu said earlier there was no alternative material available to replace polythene carry bags. But now a raw material made from starch derived from corn and potatoes has been developed for making eco friendly compostable carry bags. These eco friendly carry bags are little expansive as compared to polythene bags, due to the raw material required in manufacturing them. He further said that in the next 5-6 months all plastic carry bags should be effectively replaced with the eco friendly compostable carry bags as these bags are as per the Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS) rules.
Pannu further informed that these compostable carry bags were introduced at the Golden Temple, Amritsar on April 1 and by June 5 Jalandhar, Ludhiana will also be covered.
