School of Commerce and Management of G.S.S.D.G.S. Khalsa College Patiala organized one day International Workshop on “Critical Thinking in Teaching Commerce and Management Education”. Prof. Kirpal Singh Badungar, President S.G.P.C. , Sri Amritsar was the Chief Guest of the workshop. Dr. Jatinder Singh Sidhu, Director Education S.G.P.C. was the Guest of Honour. Eminent faculty of RMIT University, Australia, Dr. Michael Kend and Dr. Mahesh Joshi were the key speakers.
Prof. Kirpal Singh Badungar, President, S.G.P.C. shared his views on the importance of today’s teacher in creating critical thinking by quoting examples from Shri Guru Granth Sahib. He also highlighted how critical thinking of great Sikh Gurus blessed the humanity in following the path of truth, commitment and sacrifice. Dr. Jatinder Singh Sidhu, Director Education, S.G.P.C., appreciated the initiative taken by the college. He stressed to base the empirical knowledge and ethics in research.
In the inaugural session, Dr. Dharminder Singh Ubha, Principal, Khalsa College welcomed the guests and highlighted the importance of critical thinking in teaching pedagogy. He focused upon the need of developing self guided thinking amongst students as well teachers.
The first session of the workshop commenced on the importance of Critical thinking from student’s perspective by a young budding author and an alumni of London School of Economics, Sirjandeep Kaur Ubha. She shared her experiences of learning and put forward her views on teaching at national and international standards.
Dr. Michael Kend, an eminent personality from School of Accounting, RMIT University, Australia presented his views on the topic “Using Social Media in Teaching Learning Environment.” He stressed on breaking the conventional standup lecture method and adopting social media for generating critical thinking as a new tool of teaching.
In the Second session, Dr. Mahesh Joshi from School of Accounting, RMIT University, Australia highlighted on the use of innovative technologies and industry relevant assessments and the role of teaching as not only student centered or teacher centered, but importantly a mutual interchange of understanding and learning. He also paid attention on being self disciplined as a teacher and a student as well in the process of learning. He focused on engaging the students by providing them opportunities to learn new things with the help of industry assignments, Internet, Research Papers and Media.
The workshop ended with a healthy interactive session consisting of queries from the participants regarding various problems in implementing global standards of teaching at local level. Indian Educational Scenario was discussed and recommendations were given by the experts to overcome the issues in the Indian Education system.
Dr. Jasleen Kaur, Deputy Principal and HOD, thanked the guests and looked forward to bring the change in the course curriculum and evaluation systems inspired from the global standards.
