Beware: Punjab police to keep an eye on drunken guests outside marriage palaces

Principal Secretary Home department of Punjab government has issued a letter to the director general of Punjab police to crack down on the drunken drivers outside the marriage palaces due to increase in the accident cases in throughout the state.

As per the orders, drivers will be stopped, checked and asked to take breath alcohol tests outside the marriage palaces, across the state. The district police have been asked to intensify the checking outside the marriage palaces where strict checking will be done to act against tipsy drivers to prevent them from driving rashly and at high speed as that drunken person driving in an inebriated state has greater chances of causing road mishaps.

The police have been asked to send a weekly report on every Monday, give details of the how many vehicles were checked, how many marriage palaces checked, how many challans were issued of Drunken Driving outside marriage palaces.

The fines imposed for drunken driving have been raised from Rs 5,000 and can go up to Rs 10,000. The violators are also mandated to offer community service as a punishment in such cases.

According to official sources, Punjab, along with Mizoram, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh, figures among the top four states in the country on the list of states where most number of accidents are caused due to drunken driving.

It is estimated that the state witnesses at least 10 fatalities because of road accidents daily. The state Transport Department too had ordered a crackdown on those violating the law by drunken driving in July this year.
