Kanwar Inder Singh/ January 16,2023

All the Aided and Un-Aided colleges of Punjab will observe complete education bandh on 18th January, 2023 on a call given by JAC in the joint meeting of Management Federation Punjab, Principals’ Association Punjab, Punjab & Chandigarh College Teachers Union and Un-Aided Colleges Association held on 9th January, 2023 at Ludhiana. This decision had to be taken by the Joint Action Committee of Aided and Un-Aided Colleges due to the negative attitude of the Punjab Government. The main demands of the Joint Action Committee of Colleges are as follows:

  1. To roll back the decision to conduct admissions in aided-and unaided colleges through a common central portal from the session 2023-24.
  2. Withdrawal of the decision to reduce the retirement age of college teachers from 60 years to 58 years, which is violation of the service rules.
  3. Retention of 95% grant to colleges, which has been reduced to 75% by Govt.

SM Sharma, General Secretary, Management Federation Punjab has said in a statement that if the Punjab government makes admissions in aided and unaided colleges through a central portal, many colleges in Punjab will be on the verge of closure as this common portal which excludes three state universities of Punjab and all private universities. He said colleges in Punjab are already going through tough times as enrolments in many rural colleges are declining as students tend to drop out.

Dr. Khushvinder Kumar, President, Principals Association, Punjabi University Aided Colleges said that the colleges are already going through financial difficulties due to low enrolment, but the financial assistance received by the Punjab government has been reduced from 95% to 75%. Similarly, reducing the retirement age of teachers from 60 years to 58 years is a direct violation of their service rules.
