In a four years old case, Surat District Court has sentenced Congress MP Rahul Gandhi to two years of imprisonment in the criminal defamation case filed against him over his alleged ‘Modi surname’ remark during a rally in Karnataka’s Kolar, ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
“Why all the thieves, be it Nirav Modi, Lalit Modi or Narendra Modi, have Modi in their names,” the Congress leader had allegedly said during the rally.
BJP MLA and former Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi had lodged a complaint against Gandhi for his alleged remarks about Modi’s surname at a rally in Karnataka’s Kolar, ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
However, moments later, the court granted Rahul Gandhi bail, and stayed its order for a period of 30 days so the Congress leader can appeal in a higher court.
