Punjab govt college teachers refused to conduct ongoing college exams due to protest by private colleges

Today, the teachers of Government Colleges affiliated with GNDU, Amritsar, Punjabi University, Patiala , Panjab University, Chandigarh has announced to not to conduct ongoing annual, semester examination at private colleges.

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) comprising of Aided and Un-Aided Colleges Managements, Principals Associations of 3 State run Universities and Punjab Chandigarh Colleges Teachers Union (PCCTU), all the Colleges (Aided &Un-Aided) will remain close for the next three days i.e. from May 31 to June 2,2023 in view of the coercive measures taken by the State Government over Centralized Admission Portal. The Principals, Teachers and Staff of each of the Colleges will sit on protest Dharna at the gates of their respective Colleges to protest against the Higher Education Department of the Punjab Government for arbitrary, dictatorial steps being taken to implement the centralized portal.

Keeping the protest in view, the government college teachers has written a letter to director higher education, Punjab government, controller examinations of GNDU, Punjabi , Panjab University in response to Punjab Government’s letter no. 440256 dated 30-05-2023 regarding the duties of government college teachers to conduct examinations at private colleges.

The teachers said that “about 1300-1400 (regular, part time, guest faculty and HEIs) teachers are already working in government colleges in Punjab against the existing 2100 posts. Due to this, government colleges are already facing a shortage of teaching faculty.

Due to this shortage, even the government colleges are short of staff to run their own examination centers and teachers from private colleges are giving examination duties in government colleges. Now, the government is sending teachers from government colleges to private colleges, it will be impossible to run examination centers in both government and private institutions by govt college teachers.

The spokesperson of the government college teachers said, “Moreover, the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Private Colleges and PCCTU, Punjab has announced to close the gates of private colleges no outside teacher will be allowed to enter to assign duty. This may create a law and order problem.”

“Therefore, keeping all these facts in mind, all the Government College Teachers Associations of Punjab express their inability to perform these duties (which are not in the duty area of ​​Government College Teachers according to the rules) and appeal to all the universities to postpone these examinations and at the same time the government is appealed to solve the problem as soon as possible by talking to the private college associations” said the spokesperson.

If, however the universities have to conduct the examination then please assign duties of university staff as Government College teachers are already performing examination duties along with other administrative duties.
