Health Minister of Punjab, Dr. Balbir Singh visited National Midwifery Training Institute (NMTI) Patiala and inspected the upcoming Midwifery Virtual Reality (VR) Simulation Lab designed for training National Midwife Educators (NMEs). During the visit, Dr. Singh toured the state-of-the-art facility and engaged in insightful discussions with the Midwife Educators, NMTI and UNFPA team. National Midwifery Training Institute (NMTI) at Patiala is the third institute started in India for training the cadre of National Midwifery Educators (NMEs) in India.

The midwifery initiative is one of the flagship programs to promote normal birthing and respectful maternity care at healthcare facilities. The operationalization of Midwifery Initiative at NMTI Patiala and Midwifery VR Simulation Lab is supported by United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in partnership with Government of Punjab.

Virtual reality (VR) in healthcare is recognized as technology-based simulation training methodology that can simulate the real clinical environment for training healthcare workers. Through use of VR, midwives can interact in the virtual environment like that of a reality in labour rooms and can practice using training guidelines. This program will also aid as an additional tool for training in addition to the conventional method of training midwifes in the skills labs.
