Punjab government has appointed Dr Jatinder Paul Singh Gill as the new vice chancellor of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary And Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana.His appointment is for a period of four years.
Punjab’s prestigious university gets new vice chancellor. Dr Jatinder Paul Singh Gill is presently working as director, Directorate of Research, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana.
About Dr JPS Gill:
Dr. JPS Gill, a distinguished academician and an eminent researcher, has been the Director of Research at Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana, since 2016. He formerly served as Director of the School of Public Health and Zoonosis at GADVASU, Ludhiana, for eight years, as well as Coordinator of Research. Additionally, he has been an adjunct professor at the University of Saskatchewan’s Western College of Veterinary Medicine.
Dr. Gill is an expert member at national and international platforms; Joint FAO/WHO Expert Meetings on Foodborne Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR); Member of European Commission TOM Steering Committee of FAO for Control of FMD (EU-FMD); National Standing Committee on Zoonoses’ at NCDC; Scientific Panel of FSSAI for Biological Hazards (2020 onwards), Antibiotic Residues (2018 onwards), Meat and Meat Products (2015-2019), and Contaminants in the Food Chain (2012-2016); Member of Technical Expert Committee on Livestock, Animal & Allied Sciences of Department of Biotechnology (DBT); and committee member of DBT White Paper on Status of Veterinary Diagnostics and Vaccines in India (2024). In addition, he was also an expert member of many committees, including ICMR, ICAR, NCDC, PHFI, FAO on Zoonoses, AMR, and One Health. He was an expert in the development of the National Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance in India and Operationalize Action Plan for AMR Containment in India, New Delhi, sponsored by WHO. He is also a member of the Joint Working Group on Roadmap to Combat Zoonoses in India (RCZI) and a member of the Global Antibiotic Resistance Partnership-India (GARP-India).
At the state level, Dr. Gill was a member of the High-Powered Committee of CM Punjab to Develop a Road Map to Boost the Dairy Sector in the State; a member of the Expert Committee on Diversification of Agriculture in Punjab; the Breeding Authority of Punjab; and a member of the and a member of the Peer Review Committee for Punjab State Farmer Policy on Role of Livestock Production in Agriculture Diversification in Punjab.
Dr. Gill’s expertise and guidance have been instrumental in shaping the research initiatives at the university. With over 29 years of experience in academia, research, and administration, Dr. Gill has led 11 international and more than 30 national research projects as a coordinator, principal investigator (PI), and co-PI. He has accomplished several global collaborations and research initiatives with universities of international repute, including the University of Saskatchewan, the University of Calgary, York University, McGill University Canada, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, the University of Sydney, Australia, Princeton University, USA, the London School of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, Royal Veterinary College London, UK, and Free University Berlin, Germany.
Dr. Gill has received many prestigious accolades, awards, and honours from bodies of national and international repute, viz., the T. Sherikar Outstanding Public Health Veterinarian Award, the V.S. Alwar Memorial Award, the C. G. Bhaskar Memorial Gold Medal, the Dr. R.K. Agarwal Food Safety Award 2022, etc. He is a fellow of the National Academy of Veterinary Sciences and the Indian Association of Veterinary Public Health Specialists. Further, Dr. Gill has more than 240 research publications in top-tier scientific journals, 2 books, 10 book chapters, and 4 National Policy Papers to his credit and has guided more than 22 postgraduate students.
He has been instrumental in the development, patenting, and commercialization of numerous cutting-edge technologies. Dr. Gill played a key role in the establishment of the COVID-19 Virus Diagnostic Laboratory in 2019 as Nodal Officer. Dr. Gill is President of the Indian Association of Veterinary Public Health Specialists.
