Four days after remaining shut, Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Patiala, authorities have issued a notice to the faculty members that the “university will open on September 27 and classes shall be held as per schedule” despite the fact that the students are still protesting.

Jaishankar Singh, the Vice Chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Patiala said that “most of the issues of students have been solved. Students are ready to join the classes. Only few students are adamant on joining, resuming their classes. But we are pursuing them to join their classes and hopefully soon they will join the classes. By evening we will update you.”

A faculty member on the condition of anonymity said “we are governed by the High Court, Supreme Court of India. We have already updated them. He is a learned academician.  The VC went to the hostel on the invitation of girls students. On that day he along with girls students, female teacher had lunch in girls mess. Later VC, girls students, female member inspected the rooms where two girls are congestedly living in a single room as the girls’ students had raised the accommodation issue in the past. All the time in the girls hostel, girl students, female members remained with him.”

Another faculty member added that “no female members or presidents or any other members of Patiala Bar Association or Chandigarh Bar Association or any other Bar Associations has raised any finger on the alleged act of vice chancellor. The VC has implemented some strict measures in the university campus for the benefits of the students. Some students might get offended against his decision and are now demanding his removal to get rid of those measures.

“The Punjab State Women Commission has acted fast and found the VC guilty of misconduct, misdemeanor, and violating women’s rights, dignity, and safety at her own. As per the procedure she must have formed a committee and the committee can enquire about the whole incident.  After that she can judge or give her opinion on the outcome of the committee report. But acting swiftly, she had written a letter to the President of India” added another faculty member.
