In a significant move towards enhancing the quality of higher education through collaboration, the Central University of Punjab (CU Punjab) , Bathinda , hosted the second meeting of the Consortium of Higher Educational Institutions of North India (CHEINI) on Sunday. Leaders from seven top institutions gathered to strategize on collaborative approaches aimed at uplifting academic standards and fostering a student-centric learning environment. Established on July 29, 2023, CHEINI is an alliance of six central universities—Central University of Jammu, Central University of Haryana, Central University of Himachal Pradesh, Central University of Punjab, Central University of Rajasthan, and Central University of Kashmir—along with the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Ropar, all committed to setting a new benchmark in higher education in the region.

The meeting commenced with a warm welcome from Prof. Raghavendra P. Tiwari, Vice-Chancellor of CU Punjab and host of the event, who greeted the distinguished attendees, including Prof. Rajeev Ahuja (Director of IIT Ropar), Prof. Tankseshwar Kumar (VC, CU Haryana), Prof. Sanjeev Jain (VC, CU Jammu), and Prof. A. Ravinder Nath (VC, CU Kashmir, joining virtually).

In his opening address, Prof. Tiwari highlighted CU Punjab’s contributions to academics and research and spoke about the progress made by the Consortium of Higher Educational Institutions in the Bathinda region in advancing education and research in Malwa. Prof. Tiwari shared that collaborative efforts with the Bathinda region’s higher education institutions (HEIs) have increased the number of joint research projects, conferences, workshops, and consultancy initiatives. He shared that joint efforts have enabled CU Punjab to introduce two Join Diploma Programmes in collaboration with AIIMS Bathinda and MRSPTU i.e. PG Diploma in AI for Digital Imaging and Healthcare Data Analytics and PG Diploma in Intellectual Property Rights. Prof. Tiwari emphasized that CHEINI similarly has to play vital role transforming North India’s higher education landscape.

Prof. Rajeev Ahuja, Director of IIT Ropar, praised CHEINI’s progress in its first year and stressed the importance of collaboration to tackle regional and societal challenges. He urged member institutions to actively contribute to CHEINI’s objectives and utilize IIT Ropar’s incubation facilities to support innovation and startup projects that can create tangible social impact.

Delegates at the meeting explored several NEP-2020 reforms and transformative initiatives, with discussions focused on joint supervision of postgraduate and doctoral research, joint publications, shared patents, and faculty-student exchange programs. Additionally, they deliberated on expanding credit transfer options through Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), which provide flexible learning pathways, as well as the potential for joint, dual, and twin degree programs to broaden students’ academic opportunities and enhance employability.

A key outcome of the meeting was CU Punjab’s commitment to publish a comprehensive directory of research areas and faculty expertise across all member institutions, designed to streamline collaboration by helping researchers and educators identify potential partners within the consortium.  The consortium also agreed to develop joint curricula for Dual/Joint Degree and Diploma programs aligned with industry needs, with a senior academic leaders’ meeting scheduled for December at CU Jammu to finalize the structure. Additionally, the institutions will share research facilities at concessional rates and provide faculty and students with preferred access to training programs, conferences, and workshops. By pooling resources, CHEINI aims to reduce costs and expand educational opportunities across institutions.

Prof. Tankseshwar Kumar (VC, CU Haryana), Prof. A Ravinder Nath (VC, CU Kashmir), and Prof. Sanjeev Jain (VC, CU Jammu) expressed enthusiasm for CHEINI’s initiatives, highlighting how the combined strengths of member institutions will enhance the quality of education and research for students across the region.

Prof. Tiwari concluded by affirming that the success of CHEINI’s initiatives will drive North India toward becoming a hub of educational excellence, empowering students with 21st-century skills and significantly enhancing the region’s academic and research capabilities.
