Akal Takht summons vice chancellor of Punjab’s renowned university

The Akal Takht, one of Sikhism’s most revered temporal seats, has summoned the Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar Dr Karamjeet Singh, after number of complaints’ received against him for attending RSS ) chief Mohan Bhagwat’s meeting.

As per available information, the Akal Takht has asked the VC Prof. Karamjeet Singh to submit his reply in 15 days and present himself before the highest temporal seat of Sikhism.

A controversy has erupted after Prof. Karmjeet Singh, Vice-Chancellor of Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, was seen informing the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat about initiatives taken by the university at an education conclave organised by Shiksha Samskriti Utthan Nyas in Kochi on Monday (July 28, 2025).

Prof Karamjeet Singh, VC, GNDU had attended an education seminar organised by the Association of Indian Universities at Amrita Vidyapeetam in Kochi. At their, he had presented his views in around 45 seconds on what the Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar is doing to RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat and other dignitaries.

A video on social media got viral, showing V-C rising from his seat in the audience and informing the RSS chief about initiatives at the university, including the introduction of a compulsory PhD course on Bharatiya Parampara (Indian tradition) and the establishment of a Sikh Chair aimed at studying the connections between the Rigveda and the teachings of Sikhism founder Guru Nanak Dev.

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat attended a Shiksha Sanskriti Utthan Nyas event in Kochi. Specifically, he addressed an “Education Conclave” organized by the Nyas and around 100 delegates from across India, including national coordinators of the Nyas and experts in education, had taken part in the event.

After the issues is highlighted, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee immediately removed Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) Vice-Chancellor Dr Karamjit Singh from the committee formed to frame service norms for the Akal Takht’s Jathedar.

Now, the acting Jathedar of Akal Takht has summoned him. The Akal Takht serves as the supreme temporal authority within Sikhism, and its summons are taken very seriously within the community.
