Alarm bells for PSPCL in May; power demand breaks many years record; crosses 14K mark in May

The State’s power sector could be in for a tough time this summer, given the way electricity consumption is soaring.

Even before the onset of 2024 paddy season, the power demand has crossed all limits on May 20, 2024, breaking many years record as the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL). Today, the poerwcom has logged a peak demand of 14,127 megawatt (MW) at 15:16:02 (3:16 pm)

Electricity demand in state crossed 14,000 megawatt (MW) on Monday afternoon, highest-ever for the month of May in past many years has raised the eyebrows of powercom officials.

Even at the time of filling the news at around 11:30 pm today, the power demand is 10,500 MW with almost all the units of government owned, private power plants are running on full capacity.

As per available information, in 2023, Punjab’s power demand crossed the 14,000 MW mark in June 19 during the paddy season. The power demand touched 14,182 MW  3,000 MW more than last year’s demand during the corresponding period. Last year, the power demand during the period was between 11,025 and 11, 347 MW in the month of June.

An official on the condition of anonymity said “though the state can manage upto 16000 MW but with the paddy season is approaching a 4000 MW additional power will be needed. With the present demand crossing 14000 MW in May and 4000 MW will be required in June for upcoming paddy season; the state is going towards a power shortage scenario with having system of 16000 MW only. But, till now the condition is under control.”
