Another Bollywood era came to an end; veteran actor passes away

Veteran actor Shashikala Om Prakash Saigal , better known by her first name Shashikala, today passes away. Shashikala was married to Om Prakash Saigal, who belonged to the legendary Kundan Lal Saigal’s family, and has two daughters. She had famously played the supporting character parts in over 100 movies, since the 1940s and 2000s. She was a disciple of Mother Teresa and led an elusive life.
Indian politician and businessman Praful Patel tweeted the news and wrote, “Deeply saddened by the demise of Veteran actress Shashikala ji. She made a noteworthy contribution to Indian Cinema by portraying several pivotal roles. My heartfelt condolences to her family members. May her soul rest in peace.
”Shashikala was honoured with the prestigious Padma Shri by the Indian government for her unparalleled contribution to the world of cinema and arts in 2007.When she received the award, she said: “I have been recognized for this award very late, and indeed, I should have got this award long back.”
She was also conferred with the coveted Lifetime Achievement Award at the V. Shantaram Awards in 2009. Apart from this, Shashikala bagged two Filmfare awards for her work in Aarti and Gumrah.
Born in August 1932, Shashikala Jawalkar was one of six children born in Solapur, Maharashtra to a Hindu Bhavsar Shimpi caste Marathi speaking family. Shashikala made a mark with her performance in supporting roles and negative roles in Bollywood films. Shashikala has featured in over 100 films, essaying several pivotal parts. She is remembered for her performance in hits like ‘Khubsoorat’, ‘Anupama’ and ‘Ayi Milan Ke Bela’, ‘Badshah’ to name a few.
Another Bollywood era came to an end; veteran actor passes away. She earned a lot of accolades for her performance of a negative role in ‘Aarti’ (1962), co-starring Meena Kumari, Ashok Kumar, and Pradeep Kumar.
