Apathy with Punjabi University, celebrating its foundation day without regular VC for the second time in a row

Today, Punjabi University, Patiala is celebrating its 64th Foundation Day without a regular vice chancellor. This is the second foundation day when the largest university of the state is celebrating its foundation day without a regular VC.

Established on April 30, 1962 in the erstwhile princely state of Patiala with the main objective of furthering the cause of Punjabi language, art and literature, Punjabi University has since evolved into the largest University in the state. This is the second University in the world to be named after a language, the first being Hebrew University of Israel.

The last regular vice chancellor Prof Arvind had relinquished the charge on April 25, 2024. After that the government had given the charge of vice chancellor to secretary higher education KK Yadav, IAS. The foundation day of 2024 was celebrated under the command of KK Yadav, IAS, officiating VC of the university.

Later on February 21,2025, the state government has given the charge of VC Punjabi university to Prof Karamjit Singh, VC Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar. This year again the university is celebrating its foundation day without a regular vice chancellor for second time in a row.

From the last one year no VC is appointed by the state government. Though the government had made the selection panel, selected the candidates for the prestigious post, but no one is appointed as VC, Punjabi University, Patiala and it’s a mystery.

Established on April 30, 1962, it has a vision is to establish and incorporate a University for the advancement of Punjabi studies and development of Punjabi language as a medium of instruction or otherwise for providing instruction in humanistic and scientific subjects and generally for the promotion of education and research. The University started working from its present lush green, pollution free, 316 acres campus since 1965.

Initially University’s jurisdiction area was fixed as the 16 km radius having only 9 colleges. In 1969, it grew into an affiliating university, with 43 colleges affiliated to it. Now the university caters to the educational needs of Ten Districts of Punjab.
