Concerned over ongoing standoff in relations between India and Canada, Punjab’s Member of Legislative Assembly from Kapurthala constituency Rana Gurjeet Singh today made an emotional appealed for easing of relations so that a large population from India, particularly Punjab living in the North American country can live and earn livelihood without any fear and apprehension.

“There are millions of people from across India who are living in Canada, as citizens, permanent residents, as students, and on work permits the relations getting bitter is a cause of worry for them and their families back home,” said the legislator.

As per a report 1.86 million Indians live in Canada which constitutes 5% of country’s total population. For many years in the past the two nations enjoyed friendly terms.

Representing a constituency in Doaba belt of Punjab which has highest number of immigrants in different foreign countries and a large chunk in Canada, Rana Gurjeet Singh said that he is touch with a number of Punjabis as well as Indians living in Canada and they are worried about their visas and travel to the two nations.

“Sometimes due to family functions or any other emergency reasons the immigrants had to travel at a short notice for which they have a very short window for visas and processing of travel documents and if the high commissions have scaled down the functioning it might cause lots of problems for the travellers,” apprehended Rana Gurjeet Singh and suggested that the visa facilities should not be disrupted.

The security of the two nations is of a foremost significance and the interest of the immigrants is no less essential, said the legislator while issuing a vehement call to the law makers and policy crafters in Canada and India to also keep the interests of immigrants as a priority.

India and Canada is engaged in annual business worth $10 billion and in the eventuality of frozen relationship, the businesses and trade will suffer adversely impacting the financial position of traders and business houses. In my opinion business should not suffer, said Kapurthala MLA, hoping the relations between the two nations will be normal sooner than expected and all issues are resolved in a cordial manner.
