Today, the Election Commission of India announced polls for 24 Rajya Sabha seats, which will be held on June 18. In a statement, the ECI said elections would take place for seats falling vacant due to the retirement of incumbent members between June 21 and July 19.

Rajya Sabha elections will be held for four seats each in Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, and Karnataka; three seats each in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan; two seats in Jharkhand; and one seat each in Manipur, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, and Mizoram.

Several prominent leaders, including former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu, Digvijaya Singh, and Sumer Singh Solanki, are among those whose Rajya Sabha terms are ending during this period.

Bittu was nominated to the Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan after the BJP formed the government at the Centre for a third consecutive term in 2024. His term is set to end on June 21, 2026.

In Punjab, all eyes are now on Ravneet Singh Bittu’s political future — whether the BJP will re-nominate him to the Rajya Sabha and retain him at the Centre, or send him back to Punjab ahead of the Assembly elections to strengthen the party by assigning him a key role in the state.

The decision will depend entirely on the BJP high command and how it chooses to utilise Bittu’s services. The BJP has already announced that it will contest the upcoming Punjab Assembly elections on its own, and the party may look to use Bittu more actively in state politics. According to political speculation, the BJP could even project him as its chief ministerial face in Punjab or appoint him as the state BJP president.
