On Thursday, Deepti Tripathi, wife of BBMB Chairman Manoj Tripathi, was scheduled to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Panchkula. However, her joining was postponed following serious security concerns based on intelligence inputs.

Sharing the update, with a news agency Deepti Tripathi said, “Today I was going to join the BJP, but I received threatening calls from Babbar Khalsa and the Rinda group. Due to these threats, my joining had to be postponed.”

She had reached the BJP office along with nearly 1,000 supporters from her residence. However, intelligence agencies alerted her about a possible threat to her life in connection with her joining the party.

Due to the large gathering at the BJP office and the absence of security cover, the party decided to defer her joining in the interest of safety. A new date is being finalised, after which Deepti Tripathi is expected to formally join the BJP.

According to sources, news of her joining had been circulating in the media since Thursday morning. Subsequently, intelligence agencies provided inputs indicating potential threats from terror outfits such as the ISI, Babbar Khalsa, and the Rinda group. In view of the threat perception, her joining was postponed and security at her residence has been enhanced.

Sources further revealed that intelligence agencies have alerted BBMB Chairman Manoj Tripathi and advised him to remain at a safe location, preferably at home, and restrict the movement of his family members.

According to Deepti Tripathi’s spokesperson, “When she arrived at the BJP office with nearly 1,000 supporters, the event was put on hold due to security threats, as she had reached the venue without security and the crowd was very large.”

Deepti Tripathi stated that she has been involved in social welfare work for a long time. By joining a political party, she wants to expand her efforts to serve people on a larger scale. She added that she would join the BJP soon and expressed disappointment that her joining is being politicised.

Earlier in November 1988 BBMB Chairman Major General B. N. Kumar was shot dead by militants during the height of militancy. It was alleged that with just three days of rain in 1988 had forced open the floodgates of Pong and Bhakhra Nangal dams to save their reservoirs, but it led to the state’s worst ever-flood that killed 600 people, marooned 2,500 villages, and ravaged the Kharif crop. It was alleged that 1988 floods are man made.

After receiving intelligence inputs, the security of Manoj Tripathi and his family has been increased, as Punjab witnessed a flood situation last year similar to the one in 1988.
