Bhakhra dam releases extra water on partner state’s demand

Bhakhra Beas Management Board (BBMB) today releasing 29,495 cusecs of water to fulfill the requirements of Partner States- Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi & Chandigarh, since morning.

As per available information, deputy chief engineer, water regulation and officiating chief engineer Bhakra Dam, Charanpreet Singh has written a letter to executive engineers , deputy chief engineers, chief engineers (Bhakra Dam, Canal-1, Drainage Punjab), member irrigation, BBMB, deputy commissioners of Ropar, Ludhiana, Ferozepur, SDMs of Nangal, Anandpur Sahib, SP Singla construction Company to remain alert and made required arrangements.

Deputy chief engineer, water regulation, BBMB, Nangal wrote in the letter “ to fulfill the requirements of partner States it is decided to release water from Bhakra as per requirements of States. Accordingly 29, 495 cusecs water will be released from Bhakra in 19-6-2022.”

He further informed the authorities that “ with the above releases approximately 7,500 cusecs water may be released downstream Nangal Dam in Satluj River. The total releases in river Satluj including downstream Nangal Dam, Khads, escapes through  Nakian, Lohand escapes and Ropar Thermal Plant may go up to about 12,500 cusecs. The release downstream Nangal Dam may increase to 14,000 cusecs for short duration due to rainfall/ discharge in local Khads and in case of sudden closure / breach in Bhakhra Main Line/ Nangal hydel Channel, if any. The discharge in river Satluj downstream Lohand may go up to 16,000 cusecs for certain period.”

“Releasing of water from Bhakhra dam is a routine process. But this amount of water releasing is an extra ordinary thing” said an employee on the condition of anonymity.

The paddy season has started and with the rise in temperature, power cuts, the state governments are facing tough time to meet the water shortage. They demanded extra water from the Bhakhra dam and we are just accommodating them in this crucial time” said an officer on the condition of anonymity.

Meanwhile, deputy chief engineer, water regulation and officiating chief engineer Bhakra Dam, Charanpreet Singh, can’t be contacted despite repeated contacts.

Bhakhra dam releases extra water on partner state’s demand. As per sources, BBMB chairman, Sanjay Srivastava is also at Bhakra Dam, since yesterday.
