India has taken a major step towards sustainable infrastructure as the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari along with Union Minister of State for Science and Technology,Dr Jitendra Singh said that the country has officially entered an era of “Clean, Green Highways” with the launch of bio-bitumen technology for road construction at the CSIR Technology Transfer Ceremony held in New Delhi.
Union Minister further announced the successful technology transfer of “Bio-Bitumen via Pyrolysis: From Farm Residue to Roads” to M/s Bitumenking India Private Limited situated at Rajpura for commercial production of the Bio Bitumen in road construction across the nation. This breakthrough signals the beginning of a “Clean, Green Highways” era, reducing dependence on petroleum-based materials while tackling agricultural waste and carbon emissions. The adoption of bio-bitumen is more than just a technological breakthrough; it’s a step toward a more sustainable future. As the world faces the challenges of climate change, incorporating bio-based bitumen solutions into construction projects is crucial.
The Union Road Transport Minister, Nitin Gadkari, further elaborated that the India will allow mixing up to 35% bio-bitumen in petroleum-based bitumen, which can save Rs 10,000 crore of foreign exchange annually. This move is expected to reduce India’s dependence on imported crude oil and address environmental concerns like stubble burning.
The technology “Bio-Bitumen via Pyrolysis: From Farm Residue to Roads” is an indigenously developed innovation byCSIR-Central Road Research Institute (CSIR-CRRI), New Delhi and CSIR-Indian Institute of Petroleum (CSIR-IIP), Dehradun.
By choosing bio-bitumen for road construction, industries contribute to reducing reliance on finite resources and supporting long-term environmental goals. Unlike traditional bitumen derived from fossil fuels, bio-bitumen is created using renewable resources, making it a more sustainable option. Its production results in significantly lower carbon emissions, making it ideal for eco-friendly projects.

Sharing the news, Pankaj Kumar Pahuja, Director of M/s Bitumenking India Private Limited described this as game changing technology for the Bitumen industry as it would save millions in forex of our nation and will help our farmers to earn by selling the farm residues instead of stubble burning which will drastically reduce the air pollution and Air Quality Index. He further stated that Bio bitumen is more than a material—it’s a symbol of how innovation and sustainability can work together. As demand for renewable bitumen products continues to grow, bio-bitumen will lead the way in asphalt paving innovations that are not only stronger but also more environmentally responsible.
This new bio-bitumen is designed to be more affordable, longer-lasting and significantly more environmentally friendly than traditional materials.Taking to X, Union Minister said “India is possibly the first country in the world to take bio-bitumen technology to industrial and commercial scale.”
