Boon for patients, new techniques ease spinal surgery, hasten recovery

Chandigarh-People suffering from spinal complications will now be able to live a normal life after a much more comfortable medical procedure and shorter hospital stay than before. This observation was made at the international conference, “11th minimally invasive spine surgery update – 2018 and endoscopic spine surgery live and cadaveric workshop” organised by Trinity Hospital, Zirakpur/Chandigarh.  Delegates from India and abroad attended the event, organized under the aegis of the World Endoscopic Spine Surgery Society (WESS) and Trinity Education & Research Foundation. The participants demonstrated how treatment will be made less painful and more effective for patients through live surgeries, guest lectures, symposiums, clinical case discussions and operative video sessions.

What makes the new technique better?

Dr Mohinder Kaushal, organising chairman of the conference and a leading Endoscopic Spine,  Knee and sports surgeon as well as medical director, Trinity Hospital said the technique is better than open spine surgery because it entails small cuts, less hospital stay and fewer  medicines to facilitate faster recovery and quicker return to normal life. The raft of benefits has fuelled great interest among surgeons in these techniques. To promote the new techniques and faster recovery of patients, the hospital has been making efforts to conduct learning courses and workshops in endoscopic spine and knee surgery.

The workshop

This time, around 70 doctors from across the country and abroad attended the two-day scientific programme, including cadaveric workshop on endoscopic discectomy, lumbar canal decompression and percutaneous spinal fixation. Experts said the techniques help shorten the learning curve and minimize complications when used real time. The workshop, which emphasized skill development, was conducted at the anatomy department of Government Medical College & Hospital, Sector 32, Chandigarh on 26 May, 2018. The event comprised didactic sessions, information on basic concepts, interactive sessions and demonstration of live surgical techniques. Also, there were lectures and live demonstration of endoscopic spine procedures delivered by the world’s top endoscopic spine surgeons. Live surgeries demonstrated by experts covered various aspects of  Endoscopic Discectomy and Endoscopic Lumbar Canal Decompression.

The two-day conference was inaugurated by Prof B S Chavan, director principal, Government Medical College & Hospital, Chandigarh along with Maj Gen Rashmi Dutta, VSM, Commandant, Command Hospital, Western Command, Chandimandir; Vivek Attray, Ex-IAS and Dr OP Kande, member, Punjab Medical Council

Dr. Mohinder Kaushal, a pioneer in the field of Endoscopic Spine Surgery in the region, shared his vision, which led to the founding of an exclusive facility for treatment of spine disorders, arthroscopy and sports injuries.  He said, “Our commitment to excellence in spine care starts with making sure we deliver outstanding results through innovation and expertise.  The hospital has been custom created for providing world-class spine care and rehabilitation. We believe ‘Movement is Life’ and our efforts are directed towards preserving and enhancing the patient’s quality of life.”

Dr S Rohidas, vice-president, World Endoscopic Spine Society and renowned spine surgeon from Maharastra said with the advent of technological advances, it has become possible to treat majority of spine disorders using keyhole surgical techniques. With more and more people opting for these techniques, surgeons are also expressing keen interest in learning them, which is why Trinity Hospital organized the workshop.

Making lives easier

In his address at Trinity Hospital, Dr P C Dey, secretary, World Endoscopic Spine Society, said Endoscopic Spine Surgery has revolutionized the treatment of spine disorders. Open spine surgery traditionally has been associated with poor results due to big cuts, lot of pain, long recovery times, longer hospital stay, more medication and more chances of infection due to extensive dissection and healthy bone removal. With the advent of endoscopic spine surgery, the outcome and results of spine surgery have changed dramatically. Big cuts have been reduced to small cuts, weeks of hospital stay has been reduced to a few days and hours, recovery is faster, there is less need for medicines and return to activity and sports is quicker, he said.
