In Punjab, almost after every five years the trend of colour changes with the change of guard in the state.

Like, with the Bhagwant Mann, taking the reins of Punjab as chief minister, the trend for Basanti (Bright Yellow) colour is gaining pace in the state. Yellow signifies optimism, spring and happiness.

He appealed to the males to wear Basanti colour turban (pagri)  and women to take Basanti colour dupatta on his swearing-in-ceremony at Khatkar Kalan. Such was the enthusiasm among boys that they were seen helping each other in tying yellow turbans (‘pagris’)in Bhagat Singh style. Since then, a Basanti colour trend has started in the state.

Likewise, Blue colour remained the favourite in Akali regime and it symbolizes the Akali’s. Usually, Akali wore blue colour turban. Later, some Akali’s started wearing orange/ saffron colour turbans. Saffron is the colour signifying sacrifice.

When Capt Amarinder Singh became the chief minister of Punjab in 2002, first time the trend changed to white, blue and pastel colour shades as Capt Amarinder Singh usually prefered pastel shades for his turbans. Capt Amarinder Singh prefers to wear turquoise, peach, lavender, baby pink, sky blue, fawn, mauve etc colour shades. With this, the trend changed from white, blue to other multi colour turbans. Pink is the official Patiala royalty colour which he wears on family ceremonies.

Earlier the congress chief ministers Giani Zail Singh, Darbara Singh, Beant Singh wore White colour turbans(‘pagris’) as per congress party tradition. Capt. Amarinder Singh broke this congress tradition and started wearing pastel colours after becoming the head of the state.

Similarly,  five time Akali chief minister Parkash Singh Badal always wore traditional Akali blue coloured turban.

Most of the Sikh Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs already wore ‘Basanti’ (bright yellow) turbans, the party’s campaign colour, symbolic of revolution in their last term from 2017-2022.
