The Indian State of Punjab was created in 1947, when the partition of India split the former Raj province of Punjab between India and Pakistan.

In 1950, two separate states were created; Punjab included the former Raj province of Punjab, while the princely states of Patiala, Nabha, Jind, Kapurthala, Malerkotla, Faridkot and Kalsia were combined into a new state, the Patiala and East Punjab States Union (PEPSU). Himachal Pradesh was created as a union territory from several princely states and Kangra District. In 1956, PEPSU was merged into Punjab state, and several northern districts of Punjab in the Himalayas were added to Himachal Pradesh.

Since the creation of Patiala as a district in 1956, as per available information, not a single woman has been made deputy commissioner of Patiala.

With the posting of Sakshi Sawhney IAS as the deputy commissioner of Patiala, she got the honour to become the first woman officer to head this district, which she is going to join today evening.

Even a woman parliamentarian represented Patiala in the Lok sabha, but the royal city has never got the privilege to get a lady deputy commissioner.

Capt Amarinder Singh, who as a chief minister made reservation of women in jobs, local bodies’ elections fails to post a woman officer as a deputy commissioner in his home town Patiala.
