Department of Zoology and Environmental Sciences, Punjabi University celebrates World Water Day -2025

Department of Zoology and Environmental Sciences, Punjabi University, Patiala celebrated World Water Day -2025.

The theme for this year is “Glacier Preservation” under the guidance of Vice Chancellor Prof. Karamjeet Singh. Dr. Onkar Singh Brraich, Head of the department introduced the subject and welcomed the eminent speaker and said that Glacier melting is primarily driven by rising global temperatures.

It is all due to various reasons of climate change which has altered physicochemical parameters of aquatic ecosystems. Prof. A.D. Ahluwalia, eminent speaker of the day talked on the topic “Water: The Lifeline”.

He discussed about water availability on earth. He said that only three percent freshwater is available on the earth which is also depleting with a very fast pace due to various anthropogenic activities like addition of pollutants, sewage, solid waste, pesticides from agricultural fields, irrational withdrawal of ground water for irrigation purposes.

Water conservation should be practiced by each and every citizen of the country, only then it can be saved for future generations. Dr. Harneet Kaur, Assistant Professor was Organizing Secretary.

Faculty members, research scholars and students participated in the celebrations. Almost 100 students took part in this event. Dr. Meenakshi Bharti proposed vote of thanks.
