To raise awareness & promote active lifestyle to combat diabetes, Columbia Asia Hospital Patiala along with District Sports Department and Polo Ground Friends Club, organized a special programme on World Diabetes Day in the historic Polo Ground of Patiala.
The programme was formally inaugurated by prominent citizens including District Sports Officer Harpreet Singh Hundal, Mrs Universe Eurasia- Ruchi Narula, Jagjit Singh Dardi, Chairman Chardikala Group and Chief Coordinator of the event Dr. DS Bhullar.
Dr Inderpreet Kaur (State Awardee) Consultant Endocrinologist and Diabetes specialist from Columbia Asia Hospital, the key speaker delivered a talk on the theme of the day “Family & Diabetes” by International Diabetes Federation and said that World Diabetes Day is the primary global awareness campaign focusing on diabetes and is held on 14 Nov each year. While the campaign continues for the whole year, the day itself marks the birthday of Dr.Fredrick Banting who along with Charles Best & JJR Macleod, first conceived the idea that led to the discovery of Insulin in 1922 at the University of Toronto.
Dr Inderpreet said that 10% of global health expenditure is spent on diabetes & currently 463 million people in the world suffer from this disease. In 2019, the countries with the largest numbers of adults with diabetes are China, India and the United States of America, and are anticipated to remain so until 2030. Three out of four people with Diabetes live in middle and low income countries. Diabetes is the fastest growing disease in India where more than 77 million cases noted per current census. Lack of awareness about the disease and its complications, delayed diagnosis, myths surrounding diabetes management and irregular treatment makes detection and management of this disease extremely difficult with physically inactive and sedentary lifestyle being the main reasons in the surge of this modern epidemic in India. One in two people with Type 2 Diabetes don’t know that they are suffering from this disease & if this disease remains untreated, it can cause life threatening complications . These findings underline the need for education and awareness to help people spot the diabetes warning signs early & seek medical attention at the earliest.
We need massive awareness programs to prevent diabetes as about eighty percent of type 2 Diabetes is preventable through adoption of a healthy lifestyle. Thus, masses should be educated about the causes, symptoms and benefits early treatment of diabetes. Diabetes is the leading cause of heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney failure and lower limb amputation and therefore it’s crucial to keep good control of diabetes and related co-morbidities like blood pressure and lipid disorders along with regular screening to avoid dreadful health complications, said Dr Inderpreet Kaur. Also, the highlight of the talk event focused on role of family support in adopting healthy lifestyle to prevent type 2 diabetes in the family and improving health outcomes for family members with Diabetes. More than 500 people participated in the programme which concluded with a walk in the ground. Dr. Inderpreet has organized several Diabetes awareness & health motivational camps and has been honored with Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji Achiever’s Award by honorable Chief Minister Punjab on the eve of 550th ParkashPurab of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji.
