In a unique initiative to provide census data to researchers, the Directorate of Census Operations, Punjab, Ministry of Home Affairs joined hands with Indian Institute of Technology(IIT), Ropar to set up a census data research workstation.  This will provide a consolidated platform for researchers and data-enthusiasts to analyze Census data in secured data.

This research workstation will become the base of research by providing village to nation level accurate statics. The data of the Census Department is the basis of the policies made at different levels across the country. Speaking on this occasion, IIT Ropar director Professor Rajeev Ahuja said, “We are pleased to work together with the Directorate of Census Operations in fostering research collaboration. Often, access to data is a major challenge for researchers. This initiative will allow greater and efficient utilization of census data by researchers from various disciplines so that they come up with valuable insights on relevant socio-economic dimensions of the country.”

“Census count is so important, including the fact that Census data are the backbone of our democratic system of government. The India Census is one of the largest and most credible sources of statistical information and is the only source of primary data at village, town and ward level. Given the significance and expanse of Census data, optimum use of raw and processed datasets becomes extremely imperative,” said Director Census Operations, Punjab Dr Abhishek Jain, , while formalizing the collaboration.
