Dr Harsh Charitable Trust being run by the doctor couple ,Dr Harshindar Kaur and Dr Gurpal Singh has been diligently involved in providing education aid to poor girls of Punjab. Ever since its inception in 2008, the trust has provided education aid to 415 girls to study in good Private schools of Punjab.
These are the unfortunate girls who had to suffer the trauma of untimely death of their father due to farmer suicide or accidents.
Two girls –Prabhjot Kaur and Mehakjot kaur of Malerkotla lost both their parents in a suicide pact. They had to perforce stop their studies till they were adopted by the trust and now they have resumed their studies.
Daughter of a cancer survivor father and a daughter of an accident victim are also completing their education through the trust.
Dr Gurpal Singh, Hony. Secretary of the trust said that the trust aims to provide education to poor and orphan girls so that they can stand on their feet and earn a decent living. The trust imbibes in them self reliance and exhorts them to learn honest labour to make an honest living.
Dr Harshindar Kaur, President of Dr Harsh Charitable Trust , who puts her work before the words –Beti Bachao Beti Padhao ,said that girls are being killed in the mother’s womb. Even after birth the unwanted daughters are thrown on garbage dumps, they are denied even free immunization and some of them die prematurely for want of proper medical aid. In such situation, if the girl loses her father the mother finds it impossible to provide for her education.
That was the reason the Dr Harsh Charitable Trust started the work formally in 2008.Initially only 20 girls were the beneficiaries but over the years 415 poor girls have benefited from the trust. From the next academic session in April, 3 more girls have been shortlisted to be included in the trust who have lost their fathers to the demon of cancer.
Dr Sukhmani Kaur and Nanakjot Singh distributed the cheques and thanked the mothers who had come from all over Punjab braving the winter chill. The students who were helped today belonged to Ferozepur, Malerkotla, Gurdaspur, Ropar, Jagadhri, Jagraon, Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Patiala.
It is worthwhile to mention that the beneficiaries of the trust are included without any bias of religion, caste or creed. The concept of philanthropy is the sole motive for giving aid to these poor girls to enable them to study in private schools to have quality education.
Dr Harshindar Kaur said that she aimed to include at least 75 new girls in the trust but due to financial constraints, only 3 new girls are being included.
Today an amount of approximately 2 lakhs was disbursed to around 90 girls .
Dr Gurpal Singh profusely thanked the NRI brothers and sisters who have no hesitation in providing help to the trust at all times and it is only because of their benevolence that the trust has been able to complete 12 years of unbroken work. 85 % of the donated money is though by the doctor couple themselves .The couple have also helped 10 domestic violence cases in the High Court.
