DR. Kapila traces contribution of Patiala Raj Gharana in music

Eminent Music teacher and former Principal of Government College of Girls Dr. Surinder Kapila today presented a paper on ‘Contribution of Patiala Raj Gharana in Music’ in a webinar organized by Sarb Akal Sangeet Chetna Manch under the leadership of Punjabi University’s Prof. Nivedita Singh.
Dr. Kapila threw light on the immense contribution made by Patiala family in Music whereas prominent writer Mr. Balbir Singh Kanwal was the chief guest of the webinar.
In her paper Dr. Kapila, tracked the history of Patiala Music Gharana founded by Ustad Jasse Khan, who was the courtier of Maharaja Mahinder Singh, till Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan. She said that singing of this gharana was vivid, melodious besides imbued with many other qualities. She said that due to these distinct features the singing of Patiala Music Gharana had touched the sky.
Dr. Kapila said that the special variety of Patiala Music Gharana including Khial, Thumri, Tappa, Gazal, Kawaali, Sufi and others were sung in Punjabi, Sindhi, Purabi and Kashmiri languages. She said that the artists of Patiala Gharana took teaching from other gharanas and also imparted training to the artists of other Gharanas. Expressing concern over the depleting interest of artists in getting and imparting training in Gharanas, she said that even constantly reducing audience was also an area of major concern.

On the occasion Dr. Anupam Mahajan, Dr. Daisy Walia, Dr. Davinder Kaur, Dr. Neerja Grover and Dr. Neelam Paul also shared their experiences.
