Columbia Asia Hospital, Patiala marked world kidney day by creating awareness on kidney disease and educating masses how to keep your kidneys healthy. Kindly day is celebrated every year on second week of March to create awareness on kidney disease. Dr. Nitin Kumar Consultant Nephrologist at Columbia Asia Hospital, Patiala told that at per available data more than 850 million people worldwide suffering from kidney disease. One out of every 10 adults is suffering from chronic kidney disease.
In today’s stressful and busy life due to unhealthy eating habits and unbalanced lifestyle human being is suffering from many ailments. Kidney disease is one of them. Kidney is an important part of our body because many processes required for saving life are carried through kidneys. Function of kidneys is to filter from blood unwanted materials, extra water and other harmful elements. Apart from this kidneys balance sodium, potassium and Ph level in the human body. Kidneys produce hormones that help in controlling blood pressure and help in production of red blood cells. Also, kidneys activate vitamin D in our body so that it help bones in absorption of calcium. He told kidney disease occurs when kidneys get damaged or their functioning get affected. Usually high blood pressure, sugar, due to long ailment, taking wrong medicine or excessive use of pain killer put the kidneys at risk. Apart from this drinking alcohol and smoking also affects kidneys. Once kidneys are damaged it can also affect other organs of body.If kidney disease not treated on time, then kidneys get damaged and stops functioning.In such condition dialysis or kidney transplant are the treatment options.
