Employment of mother plays an important role in career choice of girl child-Punjabi University research

A research has been done at Punjabi University, Patiala to find the level of decision making and self efficacy among Punjabi girls studying in different degree colleges about their career choices and the factors which influence it.
The research work was carried out by Harjinder Kaur, a researcher of Punjabi University’s Department of Education and Community Services under the supervision of Dr. Tapan Kumar Sahu, Principal of S.D.College of Education, Barnala. It is worth mentioning that the research was sponsored by ICSSR, Chandigarh.
Dr. Tapan Kumar Sahu said that the analysis of the data obtained through this study shows that there is a positive influence of parental education and employment on career self-efficacy of college-going girls in Punjab.Female college students of Punjab have exhibited above average level of career decision-making, self-efficacy whereas the level of career maturity among female college students is below average. Social variables namely parental education and employment are significantly and positively related with career decision-making self-efficacy , also female college students who have small family size, high level of paternal education and employed mothers significantly have higher level of career maturity.
Through the data, it was clearly revealed that parental literacy plays a special positive role in this regard. Researcher Harjinder Kaur while talking about the research method told that 1000 girls from various degree colleges affiliated to Punjabi University, Patiala were randomly selected to collect data for this research.
The girls were selected from colleges situated in urban, rural areas. Out of this 1000 girls, 375 girls were from Arts stream, 205 from Science branch and 420 with professional course were selected for the study by the researcher.
Through various questionnaires and other methods, it was known from these selected girls that how aware they are about their career choice and the necessary efforts to be made in this direction. By analyzing the answers given by them it was also estimated that how capable they are of choosing a career that suits their education, ability and talent. She said that an interesting fact emerged through the study that especially in families where the mother is employed, there are better and positive results in terms of career choice awareness, maturity and self efficacy in girls.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Arvind gave special congratulations to the researcher and supervisor for this research and said that the research will help in making a real estimate of the awareness and ability of the girls of Punjab towards their career choices . The study provides valuable insights into enhancing career readiness among female college going students of Punjab.
