Every year, 15th September is celebrated as Engineer’s Day all across India. This special day is observed to honor the achievements of engineers in the field of engineering and to encourage excellence in this profession.

It is important to mention that this day is celebrated in memory of one of India’s greatest engineers and Bharat Ratna awardee, Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya. His contributions played a pivotal role in the development and prosperity of India. Dr. M. Visvesvaraya was responsible for the construction of several dams in India, including the Krishnarajasagar Dam, Khadakwasla Dam in Pune, and Tigra Dam in Gwalior.

The planning for these began in 1909 and were completed in 1932. With the support of the Mysore Government, he also established numerous factories and educational institutions. Due to these invaluable contributions, he was recognized and honored nationwide.

Every year, on 15th September, National Engineer’s Day is celebrated to pay tribute to Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, a legendary civil engineer of India. He was one of the first civil engineers in the country and was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1955.

National Engineer’s Day is not only a tribute to Visvesvaraya’s work but also a day to remember all other engineers who have made significant contributions in various fields. Their dedicated efforts have helped advance the growth and development of India in numerous ways.

Across the world, engineers in various disciplines — Mechanical, Telecommunications, Civil, Electrical, Medical, and Chemical Engineering, among others — have played a major role in improving human life and bringing revolutionary changes to industrial and agricultural sectors, thereby helping society tackle challenges like population growth.

Wherever science has introduced new techniques, it is the visionary thinking and tireless efforts of engineers that have made their development possible. Without engineers, the comforts of modern life would not be imaginable. Someone once asked an engineer why he felt proud to be one. The engineer emotionally replied: “Just as doctors are linked to health services and help shape the future by preventing diseases, and just as legal professionals ensure justice, an engineer’s work is directly linked to the development and prosperity of the nation and society. That’s why I am proud to be one of them.”

Engineers are not just technical experts — they are creative visionaries and master craftsmen whose scientific outlook and innovation help take the nation forward. They quietly strengthen the very foundations upon which a nation’s present stands and its future rises. The infrastructure built from their vision not only eases the lives of citizens but also boosts the economy and creates new employment opportunities. Prosperity — the dream of every society — is made possible through the creative endeavors of engineers.

While speaking with the author, Chief Engineer (Operations South Zone), Er. Rattan Mittal of PSPCL urged the engineers serving the electricity consumers of PSPCL to work with even more dedication and diligence, as they are key to Punjab’s economic progress.

If any department has made a significant contribution to the inclusive growth and economic strength of Punjab, Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) is at the forefront. It has brought light to over 10 million consumers of different segments in the state.
