First academic session of Punjab Sports University begins

The first academic session of the newly established Maharaja Bhupinder Singh Sports University (Punjab Sports university) Patiala that commenced here on Tuesday.
The state cabinet had approved the Punjab Sports University Ordinance-2019, on June 6, paving way for the establishment of the university. Subsequently, a notification in this regard was issued on July 22.
“Tough the admission process started very late on August 17, 2019, but in a short span of just 40 days, after the issuance of notification by the Punjab Government, the university got a positive response for admissions for the first academic session. The date of Physical Fitness Test & counseling for BPES (Bachelor of Physical Education & Sports) was August 29 and Date of counseling for PG Diploma in Yoga was August, 30.” said a spokesperson of the sports university.
Vice Chancellor of the university Lt Gen JS Cheema (retd) said, “ 35 students got admission in the first academic session. Though the number of students is less, it is more important that a beginning has been made.”He said classes will be conducted on the campus of the Government Physical Education College, Patiala.
The university has been set up to promote education in the areas of sports sciences, sports technology, sports management and sports coaching. It will focus on education, training and research in areas related to sports, besides offering professional and academic leadership to other institutions in the field of physical education and sports sciences.
The administrative office of the university will be ready in the next few days at Mohindra Kothi on Mall Road in Patiala. The permanent university campus will come up at Sidhuwal village, on Bhadson road in the district where land has been acquired for the purpose.
A spokesperson further informed that “the University Grants Commission (UGC) has given the university permission to award degrees by conducting courses through its own departments, constituent colleges or through its affiliated colleges, in regular mode with the approval of statutory bodies/councils concerned, wherever it is required.”
